Jadavpur University (JU) alumnus Hindol Majumdar, an accused in the incident of alleged attack on the education minister Bratya Basu’s convoy inside the JU campus during March, was granted bail by the Alipore court on Monday.
He was produced before the court by Kolkata Police (KP) today after the expiry of his police custody for three days. On Friday, the court had remanded the young researcher at Spanish university to a three-day police custody after the government pleader submitted that even though the accused was away in Spain at the time of the incident, he was the key conspirator in the attack on the minister’s car.
The KP had arrested him at the Delhi airport last Wednesday after he landed from Europe in the wake of a lookout circular notice issued against him.
Today, the counsel during hearing in the court compared his alleged involvement to the attack on the American Center in Kolkata in January 2002, where the mastermind Aftab Ansari planned the sabotage operation while sitting in Dubai.
The counsel claimed Hindol’s name did not feature in the FIR in connection with the JU campus violence incident five months ago, but added that the court allowed custody of the accused in a separate case.
Police had earlier said they have accessed conversations between Hindol and students who had surrounded and attacked Mr Basu’s car.
