  • Kolkata: Allegations of animal cruelty and subsequent assault on those inflicting the cruelty by a section of locals and animal lovers have led to the filing of two separate police cases in the Parnasree area on Tuesday. According to DC (Behala-SWD) Rahul De, the controversy revolves around a pet clinic operated by a woman and her associates, which came under scrutiny following complaints from local resident Somnath Mistry.

According to Mistry, a foul odour emanating from the clinic prompted him and other locals to investigate the premises on Tuesday night. Upon entering, they allegedly discovered the clinic being run in unsanitary conditions, with the decomposed carcasses of a puppy and a kitten wrapped in plastic bags. Cops said four puppies recently lost their lives in the clinic, and the kitten died after being bitten by dogs.

Mistry claimed that when he and others confronted the clinic operators, they were met with hostility. The accused, including the owner and her aides, allegedly assaulted the complainants, used abusive language, and threatened them with dire consequences. In response to Mistry's allegations, the Parnasree Police Station registered a case under various sections of the BNS and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

However, the owner filed a counter-complaint against Mistry and his associates, accusing them of criminal trespass, assault, and damage to property, as well as outraging her modesty during the altercation, when her clothes were allegedly torn. Police have registered a counter-case.

Cops have seized the carcasses from the clinic. The remains have been preserved, and arrangements are being made for a post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death, said DC De.

Parnasree cops said they are probing if the clinic was being operated in compliance with legal procedures. According to sources, the person who established the clinic is not a local. There are also allegations that the meat of deceased pets is sent to various restaurants. "We will investigate these allegations," an officer said, adding that the carcasses had been dismembered. Samhita Das, chairperson of KMC's ward 14 committee, said, "I have been informed about the incident. I have spoken with locals and will discuss this matter with Sanchita Mitra, the councillor of ward 132.
