Kolkata: A Birbhum court on Thursday sentenced 12 persons to life imprisonment for the murder of two Trinamool Congress supporters in Birbhum's Margram more than two years ago.
The victims — Nazrul Islam, also known as Newton, and Laltu Skj — were ambushed near Dhulphela More on the night of February 4, 2023, by a gang and were attacked with crude bombs.
The two were taken to Rampurhat Hospital, where Nazrul died. Laltu died later in Kolkata, where he was shifted for treatment.
Among the 12 arrested were local Congress worker Sujauddin Ahmed and his two sons. Ahmed was the main accused.
On Thursday, the court convicted the accused guilty of murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy.
Special public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee said the forensic and DNA evidence, especially those collected from the footwear of Ahmed, helped them secure conviction.
