Trend continues, most among WBJEE toppers opt for IITs

Kolkata: Most among the top 10 rank-holders in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) have already moved out of Bengal to pursue higher education at premier institutes of their choice in other states, IITs being the top pick as well as Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
Though many felt that several students' decision to move out of the state to study elsewhere could have been prompted by the delay in the announcement of WBJEE results, state higher education minister Bratya Basu pointed out that this was not a stray instance of this year and any debate on this matter was "unnecessary". He claimed that WBJEE top 10 rank-holders taking admission at IITs had become a trend. A senior official also pointed out that 23,850 among 1.1 lakh WBJEE candidates had appeared for the test from other states. Aniruddha Chakrabarti, who topped WBJEE, the entrance test for admission to engineering institutes in Bengal, has already secured a seat in computer science and engineering at IIT-Kharagpur, where classes have also started. "I wanted to study computer science at an IIT. I took admission at Kharagpur last month," said Chakrabarti, an alumnus of Don Bosco, Park Circus. "Many of my friends, who had been waiting for WBJEE results, are relieved that the list is finally out.

Kalyani Central Model School alumnus Samyajyoti Biswas, who came second, has chosen to study computer science and engineering at IIT Bombay. "I wanted to study at IIT Bombay. So, when I got a chance, I didn't spare a thought for anything else," he said. The third rank-holder, Dishannth Basu, has chosen IISc Bengaluru. His batch mate, Aritro Ray, has ranked fourth, but he has taken admission at IIT Bombay. Aritro's mother Mohua Maitra, however, said she felt proud to see her son's name among the WBJEE top 10. Fifth rank-holder Trishanjit Doloi has gone to IIT Bombay. Mita Patra, mother of Sagnik Patra, the sixth rank-holder, said, "My son's aim has always been to study at IIT- Kgp and that's where he has taken his admission.
" Archisman Nandi, who came eighth in WBJEE, has also gone to IIT-Kgp, where he is studying AI. Another among the Top 10, Arka Banerjee, has also moved to IIT.(Inputs by Sujoy Khanra, Mohammad Asif)
