Kolkata: The higher education department published the first merit list for undergraduate candidates on centralised admission portal (CAP) on Friday, within a couple of hours of the Supreme Court clearing the deck for the OBC issue. The first-semester UG classes will begin on Aug 29, next Friday.
The department had earlier said that the new academic session for undergraduate classes would begin on Aug 1 but the entire process was pushed back owing to the legal battle over seat reservations for OBC students; the matter had been pending in the SC.
The state board Class XII Higher Secondary results were declared on May 7, CBSE Class XII results on May 13 and ISC on April 30. After the first merit list was published on Friday —it came three-and-a-half months after the board results were out—education minister Bratya Basu said, "We were equally concerned about the merit list. The first phase of admission will continue till Aug 25. I wish UG aspirants the best as they start their journey.

"A total of 3.6 lakh candidates had applied for college seats through the centralized admission portal. Among them, 3,09,667 were found eligible, as several candidates did not upload their caste details while some had cancelled their registration. After the first round of admissions till Aug 25, the physical verification of documents will be held on Aug 23, 25 and 27 and UG classes will begin two days later.
College principals sounded relieved. Asutosh College principal Manas Kabi said, "We are happy the process has finally started.
" But another principal pointed out: "I am worried about how many seats will fill.
