Kolkata: A 65-year-old woman, Nandita Basu, was found dead at her Beleghata home on Saturday afternoon amid allegations that her son, after a major argument with her, had assaulted her brutally, leading to her death. The son, Mainak, has been arrested. While family claimed Mainak had schizophrenia, police were yet to confirm it. Mainak will be taken to experts on Sunday for a psychiatric examination. Nandita's husband, Kamal, who owned a garment manufacturing unit, died in 2006. She lived with her son, who was unemployed, said police.

Cops found no sign of life in her. Blood was oozing from her mouth," said joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar. Her body was sent to NRS Hospital for post-mortem. "A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder is filed," said DC (ESD) Gaurav Lal.
A family member pointed said Nandita's nephews and nieces took care of the mother-son duo. "They also had some earnings from renting out their property to different families," said Nandita's brother Suthirtha. "Nandita had told us Mainak had schizophrenia but we had no clue how acute it was. We knew he often argued with his mother. On Sunday, the cook arrived to find my sister lying unconscious and blood on her face. Mainak was sitting in his room, with little knowledge of what had transpired.
" Cops at the Beleghata PS said they were not certain about what the argument was about. "We are yet to find out what had led to the argument," said a senior officer.(inputs by Suparna Goswami)
