Heavy rains have flooded residential areas across several wards of Burdwan Municipality and parts of Kalna subdivision, further worsening the situation.
Neighbourhoods including Subhaspally, Mithapukur, Rasikpur, Bajepratappur, Shulipukur, Khaluibilmath, Nilpur, Becharhat and Amtala in Burdwan town were waterlogged following continuous rainfall since yesterday. The situation deteriorated further after the collapse of the drainage system.
Residents such as Debdas Rakshit of Subhaspally and Gourishankar Pramanik of Lakshipurmath alleged: “The drains are not cleaned on time and in several areas the old drains are never cleared, which has led to today’s crisis.”
In Kalna, students of Nandagram Primary School and their guardians blocked the STKK highway today after venomous snakes were spotted entering classrooms with rainwater. Teachers also joined the protest. The school headmaster said: “The entire school is waterlogged. It will take at least three days for the water to recede, but fresh rain has worsened the situation. A couple of snakes were seen moving inside the inundated classrooms.”
The matter has been reported to the district administration, at a time when chief minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit Burdwan for an administrative meeting on Tuesday.
Commenting on the deteriorating condition in Burdwan town, Paresh Chandra Sarkar, chairman of Burdwan Municipality, blamed excessive rainfall: “For the past two months we have been struggling with abnormal rain. We are practically helpless in this situation.”
