  • Kolkata: Vidyasagar Setu, which was closed for over 17 hours from 5 am on Sunday, was reopened for normal traffic movement from 10.25 pm onwards following repair work that was conducted throughout the day. The bridge was shut for the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners to undertake necessary repair and rehabilitation work, including the replacement of the stay and holding down cables and bearings.

Alongside conducting heavy repair work, the bridge was also closed to facilitate the lifting and placement of steel portal beams near Santragachhi bus terminus for the construction of a six-lane elevated corridor on Kona Expressway. Two bearings out of a total of 10 were completed on Sunday. This involved jacking the bridge. "The cables will be changed next, for which temporary blockades of around six to eight hours might be sought during the weekends," said an official.

Traffic police said they continued ambulance operations throughout the day. "For buses and smaller vehicles that used Howrah Bridge, we created an additional lane bound for Howrah so that trains were not missed.

We also made social media announcements that led a significant number of travellers to know of our plans beforehand and plan their trip accordingly," said an officer from Vidyasagar Traffic Guard.

Police said that several smaller vehicles from the highways also used Nivedita Setu along with the trucks in the morning, which slowed down traffic on BT Road. "Being a Sunday, no major traffic hiccup was reported," said another officer at Lalbazar.
