Kolkata: Following chief minister Mamata Banerjee's announcement and its subsequent cabinet approval earlier this month, the state govt has formally started the process to set up ‘Durga Angan'—a temple-like complex dedicated to Goddess Durga. A plot has been identified in New Town with an estimated project cost of close to Rs 262 crore.
Sources from the state secretariat said that a plot opposite Eco Park near Westin Hotel in New Town has been primarily chosen for setting up the complex, looking into its connectivity and proximity to the airport, metro stations and other tourist spots. The West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO) has been entrusted with the job to set up the complex, and the process to engage an agency that will construct the complex has been initiated.
"It would be the first-of-its-kind temple complex dedicated to Goddess Durga, on the lines of the Jagannath temple that has been developed in Digha. It will have all the amenities and facilities to be round the year tourist attraction," said a senior govt official. | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in KolkataAt the July 21 Martyrs' Day rally the CM had announced the plan to set up a permanent Durga temple. The plan was approved in the state cabinet, following which the tourism department and Hidco were asked to identify a suitable place in or around the city where the complex could be set up.
State govt officials said the initiative to set up a temple-like complex dedicated to Durga has been prompted by Unesco's recognition of Bengal's Durga Puja as a heritage, with the aim to create a place of worship which would attract tourists and visitors round the year. A trust will be formed to oversee construction work and manage the temple complex.
