KOLKATA: After three days of undergraduate admission through the state common admission portal (CAP), seven out of 10 seats in colleges remained vacant when the initial deadline expired on Monday. The large number of vacancies prompted the education department to extend the last date of admission by 24 hours till end of Tuesday.
Of the 9.5 lakh UG seats, over 7 lakh remained vacant at the end of Monday. Altogether, 4,02,557 seats had been allotted for 3,09,667 eligible students. Till 8pm Tuesday, 2.3 lakh admissions were completed. Over 1.5 lakh students completed physical verification, which will continue till Thursday, a day before commencement of classes. According to the earlier notice, physical verification was to be completed on Wednesday.

"First semester classes will start on Aug 29. So, those who might have missed out for some reason have been given time to take this opportunity," the official said.
The official added that this time only three days have been given to complete the admission process unlike earlier years.
Lady Brabourne College principal Siuli Sarkar said, “The technical issue we faced on Monday was resolved and we did not experience any further trouble. But, the number of admissions is significantly lower compared to previous years. If the upgrade and mop-up rounds had started a little earlier, more seats could have been filled up.” She also highlighted that they received a number of calls from students who missed the first round of admission after wrongly filling their choices, requesting a chance.
Another principal highlighted that the trend was slow and only few seats got filled in the first phase.“There is no use in extending dates for the first phase of admission because students with higher percentages might have taken admission to other colleges that are not under CAP.”
