Calcutta University (CU) has decided to go ahead with the fourth-semester examinations for B. Com and B.A. LLB scheduled for August 28, the same day as the Trinamool Congress student wing’s (TMCP) foundation-day events, after the university syndicate resolved not to change the dates. The exams are scheduled to be held from 2 PM to 5 PM.
The TMCP had urged the university to postpone the exams, arguing that August 28 marks the foundation day of the student body, traditionally observed with large gatherings and processions. They claimed the event would cause major traffic disruptions, inconveniencing thousands of examinees
The interim vice-chancellor (VC), Shanta Dutta De, said a notification dated August 25 communicates the decision to all colleges and centres. “On the basis of resolution taken by the Syndicate in its meeting held on 04.08.2025, all examinations scheduled on 28.08.2025 will be held on that very date without any change, hence all colleges are hereby required to conduct the scheduled examinations (as allotted) on 28.08.2025 (Thursday),” the notification said.
“We have informed the State Education department, the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the Director General of Police and Inspector General of police, but no reply has come. In the letter, we have stated that they are to ensure smooth running of the examination. We have sent a list of all the centres,” Dutta De said.
Regarding the protests by the TMCP outside the university campus, Dutta De said, “If the state government or the education minister would have asked them not to protest then I would have been happy. Will certainly look into if any legal action is required. These dates are not decided by the Vice Chancellor. These dates have been decided 2-3 months back and if one date is changed then a lot of changes will have to be made. The syndicate has decided that the date will not be changed, thus it will be held on decided date.”
Reacting to the examination date not being changed, TMCP Calcutta University unit head Avirup Das told The Indian Express, “She has been working to satisfy a particular party for the last two years. If students are unable to reach on time who will be responsible? Lakhs of people will come from districts. We will try to help students who face problems on reaching the examination centres.” “CU TMCP HELPLINE number is – 8670413778. We are there for all students,” Das said.
