  • Kharagpur: An elephant calf, estimated to be between two-and-a-half to three years old, was found dead on Thursday morning in the Mirga forest of the Arabari range under Midnapore forest division, sources said.

The exact cause of death will be conformed after a postmortem, though officials suspect the calf may have died from overeating.

An official from the Arabari forest range said, "Elephants usually raise an alarm when they face a problem. Around 3.30-4.00 am, hearing such an alarm, forest workers rushed to the spot and found a calf lying dead. The last rites will follow as per procedure."
