  • Kolkata: Srabanti Bhattacharya, principal of Rani Birla Girls' College, was suspended by governing body president Kajari Banerjee on Friday, while the formation of GB is pending before Calcutta High Court.

Assistant professor Priti Ghatani has been appointed as vice-principal and asked to execute the principal's responsibilities as well.

An order was issued on the college letterhead, citing the GB's decision on Friday at 4.35 pm to transfer all duties to Ghatani. The letter sent to Bhattacharya said the governing body unanimously decided to suspend her following multiple allegations, including violation of statutory provisions regarding election of teachers' council and creating a nuisance in the college atmosphere.

Bhattacharya said, "Some of them who claimed to be GB members came to the college with police and took the decision when GB formation is pending before HC. I am ready for legal battle." A senior govt official said she was unaware of the matter. Banerjee said she was busy in a meeting. Subsequent calls went unanswered.
