  • Other than chief minister Mamata Banerjee, no MLA along with his/ her private security personnel, will be allowed inside the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Monday.

Only the chief minister along with her security guard provided by the state government is allowed inside the Assembly complex.

Biman Bandyopadhyay, Speaker, today said that legislators, including the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari along with their respective security personnel, are not allowed inside the Assembly premises. Only, the chief minister is exempted from this restriction imposed among all other legislators belonging to both ruling and opposition parties, Mr Bandyopadhyay said.

This restriction has already been implied in the parliament and Assemblies in other states.

Mr Bandyopadhyay was prompted to take such measures after the Calcutta High Court (HC) sought an affidavit from him and Sukumar Roy, secretary in the state Assembly.

Following a petition filed by BJP MLAs in the HC, the affidavit was sought seeking to know the Assembly’s stand in connection with security issues of the legislators of ruling and opposition parties.

Today, the speaker made this announcement at the backdrop of the court directive.

Several MLAs, including Mr Adhikari in the saffron camp, had alleged in the court that their security personnel from central forces are not allowed inside the Assembly complex while there is no bar for state policemen.

The HC had raised questions saying: “Why can’t the BJP MLAs along with their central force jawans enter into the Assembly at a time when the Trinamul Congress legislators, guarded by state policemen, are allowed inside its premises? Why does the speaker make such a differential stand on the issue?”
