  • Kolkata: There will be no special night services along the Blue Line from Wednesday, Metro Railway announced on Tuesday. The two 10.40 pm services on the Dum Dum-Shahid Khudiram section were available on weekdays.

"On account of the suspension of Kavi Subhash station and due to operational constraints and maintenance-related issues, it will not be possible to operate the special experimental night metro services at 10.40 pm between Dum Dum and Shahid Khudiram stations from Wednesday till further notice," said a Metro Railway spokesperson.

The carrier experimented with night services on the North-South line at 11 pm on May 24 last year and advanced it to 10.40 pm a month later.

In Sept last year, officials said they were keen to continue with the special services even as only around 1,000 passengers travelled on average each night. The daily footfall was expected to rise in the festive season, but it has become difficult to carry on with the last services after the closure of the Kavi Subhash terminal station.

"The Blue Line has already been stressed with the Kavi Subhash station closure. Amid the crisis, three new sections were commissioned without readying the infrastructure. We are not surprised that the special night train services have been withdrawn," said Subhasis Sengupta, vice-president, INTTUC-affiliated Metro Railway's Progotisil Sramik Karmachari Union.
