  • The Leather Sector Skill Council (LSSC) inaugurated a training programme and National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme awareness camp at Amtala in South 24-Parganas on Tuesday, targeting 620 candidates for leather goods and garment stitching operations.

The centre will initially train 120 stitching operators, with 500 more to follow. This builds on successful programmes in Sonarpur, Magrahat, and Ghutiari Sharif that have trained over 273 people now employed in Kolkata and nearby areas.

LSSC chairman Mukhtarul Amin emphasised the programme’s focus on sustainable livelihoods and uplifting Scheduled Caste communities. Council for Leather Exports vice-chairman Ramesh Kumar Juneja and CLCT Tanners Association general secretary Imran Ahmed Khan praised the initiative’s dual impact on industry growth and grassroots employment.

The council also announced plans to expand World Bank-funded training for persons with disabilities nationwide and sign MoUs with a private university and Solidaridad India to boost youth and women participation in the leather sector.
