Kolkata: Sub-inspector Jaydeb Chattopadhyay, 32, of the state police's Jangalmahal Battalion, attempted suicide after shooting his parents with his service revolver on Wednesday night.
According to cops, Jaydeb, a resident of Asansol, was living in a rented house in the Jhargram police line area. He was unmarried, and his parents — Debabrata Chattopadhyay, 62, and Shampa, 50 — lived with him. On Wednesday night, neighbours heard gunshots from his room and immediately informed the police. Cops reached the spot and recovered the bodies of Shampa and Debabrata. When taken to Jhargram Medical College, doctors declared his parents dead.
Jaydeb is currently undergoing treatment at the SSKM hospital in Kolkata.
Police initially suspect that Jaydeb attempted suicide after killing his parents. He had taken leave on Sept 2, 3 and 4. Police are probing what happened during the first two days.
A colleague of Jaydeb said: "Sir loved his parents very much and took good care of them. We are shocked by this incident." Jaydeb's father was reportedly suffering from a serious illness. He was allegedly depressed over his parents' failing health.
Jhargram Police superintendent Arijit Sinha said: "A suicide note has been found."
