A 32-year-old Sub-Inspector (S-I) allegedly shot his parents dead inside their rented home in Jhargram town before he tried to shoot himself.
S-I Joydeep Chatterjee of the Junglemahal Battalion allegedly used his service revolver to kill his parents, said police, adding they were alerted after neighbours heard the gunshots early on Thursday morning.
“Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they discovered the bodies of Chatterjee’s parents. The S-I was critically injured with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, where he is currently receiving treatment for his injuries,” said a senior police officer.
Police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
“A purported suicide note has been found in the S-I’s house. In the note, allegedly written by Chatterjee, he claims complete responsibility for the killings and states that no one else should be held accountable,” the officer added.
The motive behind the incident has not been ascertained yet.
The Junglemahal Battalion, which operates under the overall administrative control of the Eastern Frontier Rifles, Salua, has been informed of the incident, said police. A senior officer confirmed that they are cooperating fully with the ongoing police inquiry.
In early 2024, a Kolkata Police constable was found dead with a bullet injury to his head, and his service revolver was found nearby. The police department’s initial investigation suggested it was a suicide. Another constable had died by suicide the previous month. These incidents had led to concerns about a high-stress environment. In 2025, a police constable on duty at a hospital in Hooghly district was critically injured by a self-inflicted gunshot, and he survived.
