State exploring if ‘tainted’ teachers can be recruited as Group C, D employees: CM

Kolkata: CM
on Thursday said the Bengal govt was taking legal opinion on whether tainted teachers can be recruited as Group C or Group D employees. Addressing "those who have been termed ineligible despite being teachers for so long (10 years)", the CM said, "I am holding legal discussions on this.
"
The CM was speaking at a Teachers' Day event to felicitate state Shiksharatna awardees and hand out the Best School awards at Dhana Dhanya auditorium in Alipore.
The CM said she was pained at teachers losing their jobs. "Many teachers lost their jobs. Do you think I am happy about this? No. Those who used to work, the untainted ones, we have already started the process," she said.
"Their age and experience are being considered and will be given additional weightage.
They can use this advantage. Our hands are tied because the matter is subjudice. What we could do is to give them an advantage so that they can regain their posts with due respect and dignity," said Banerjee.
The CM also laid out a plan for Group C and Group D school staffers who lost their jobs. "As far as Group C and D are concerned, the court said they can work elsewhere. We have already issued a notification for this. The process for teacher recruitment will likely end in two to three months.
After that, we will conduct exams for Group C and D. I will ask the chief secretary to take their age and experience into consideration and deal with it legally," she added.
Banerjee further said: "We still have 56,000 vacancies in teaching posts. Out of this, advertisements have been published for 35,726 posts and around 21,000 vacancies are still pending. "Many times we want to do something but there are legal hindrances because of a few people.
I will not blame the court though. There are some people who go to court to stall everything, and then people's futures are ruined."
The CM said 1.5 lakh recruitments have been made since Trinamool took over governance of the state.
"Additionally, we have recruited 10,000 teachers and principals. In 2016, there was a notification for recruitment of teachers at secondary and higher secondary levels. In total, 17,297 teachers were recruited for these levels," Banerjee said.
"In 2016, recruitment for upper primary level started. After overcoming multiple legal hurdles, the recruitment was completed in April 2025. As a result of the hiring process, 9,700 teachers were recruited," the CM added.
