Kolkata: A 35-year-old casual staffer was electrocuted to death at a central PSU's Hyde Road factory in the Port area on Wednesday night. The deceased has been identified as Sarwar Ali.
Ali was reportedly electrocuted while concluding his work for the day. He was handling a heavy oxygen cylinder.
"The cylinder accidentally fell on to a live electric wire lying on the ground, which had its rubber coating damaged. This led to Ali's electrocution. Upon receiving the distress call at 9.30 pm, officers from the West Port Police Station arrived at the scene. They found several staff members present, who recounted the sequence of events leading to the accident.
Ali was immediately rushed to Ekbalpore Nursing Home by his co-workers, but he was declared dead upon arrival," said Rupesh Kumar, Joint CP (crime & traffic).
The incident sparked some tension among the workers and the local community. However, with the intervention of Ali's family and the management of Braithwaite & Co Ltd, the situation was quickly brought under control. As a gesture of respect and mourning, the management decided to keep the factory shut on Thursday. The company has expressed its condolences to Ali's family.
