KOLKATA: A woman and her two daughters were killed when a mud wall collapsed on them at Mandirbazar on Friday. The sudden mishap cast a pall of gloom over the locality. Police from Mandirbazar police station recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem.
The victims — Sheela Karmakar (15), Priya Karmakar (10), and their mother Brihaspati Karmakar — lived in a mud house at Kamar Para in Mandirbazar.
At the time of the incident, all three were inside when the wall suddenly gave way. Neighbours rushed in to help and informed the police. Rescue efforts were carried out, and the victims were taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Residents said the family was sanctioned funds under the 'Amar Bari' housing project, but construction of their new home was delayed. In the meantime, they continued to live in the old mud structure, which weakened further due to days of heavy rain.
Local MLA Joydeb Haldar later visited the bereaved family and assured them of support. The tragedy has left the entire neighbourhood in deep mourning.
