In a landmark achievement for Bengali cinema, Bijoyer Pore (Autumn Flies) has become the first Indian Bengali film to be officially selected at the prestigious Osaka Asian Film Festival (OAFF) 2025 in Japan. Directed by Abhijit SriDas and produced by Sujit Raha, both are residents of Siliguri, the film’s screening was accompanied by a symposium that celebrated the legacy of Bengali cinema—from the works of Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Mrinal Sen, to the contemporary vision of SriDas.
Set against the backdrop of Durga Puja, Bijoyer Pore is a psychological drama exploring family, tradition, and reconciliation. Featuring Padma Shri Mamata Shankar, Swastika Mukherjee, and Deepankar De, the film has earned both critical acclaim and commercial success. Mamata Shankar’s powerful performance won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award 2025 and several international honours.
Director Abhijit SriDas described the Osaka selection as “a historic honour for Bengali cinema,” adding: “Bijoyer Pore is a story of silence, memory, and reconciliation at the edge of life and death—universal emotions that bind people across cultures. Sharing this story with Japanese audiences is not only a dream come true for me, but also for everyone connected to the film.”
The film has already travelled widely on the festival circuit, winning the Audience Choice Award at the Dhaka International Film Festival, multiple awards at the Telangana Bengali Film Festival, and being showcased at festivals in Kolkata, Jaffna, Dallas, Boston, and Atlanta.
With its recognition at Osaka, Bijoyer Pore has opened a new horizon for Bengali cinema, creating a cultural bridge between India and Japan while reaffirming that the language of cinema transcends borders.
