Jalpaiguri engg college students detain 3 youths over ‘molestation’

Jalpaiguri: Students of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College forcibly picked up two youths from Denguajhar tea estate on Saturday afternoon and confined them in the hostel after they allegedly molested the fiancée of a student, video-graphed the incident and circulated it on social media.
A third youth was held in the evening.
The third-year student had visited the tea estate with his girlfriend, who is from Jalpaiguri, when a group of youths allegedly harassed them, assaulted the engineering student and molested the girl.
After the victims alerted their classmates, students rushed to the garden situated close by, rescued the couple and apprehended two of the accused. They were brought to a college hostel, locked in a room and thrashed.
As the news spread, teachers tried to persuade the students to release the three youths and hand them over to the police. But their appeal was disregarded. The protesting students also set up a blockade at the college entrance, preventing outsiders from accessing the premises.
A large team from Kotwali PS intervened to rescue the youths held in the hostel. After over an hour of negotiations, the three harassers were taken into custody.
Police said they were to find any evidence of the video being circulated. "We have started an investigation," said Sanjay Dutta, inspector-in-charge, Kotwali PS.
