  • Kolkata: A babysitter hired through an ayah centre in West Rajapur near Baghajatin has been accused of stealing and cleaning up a New Town flat of lakhs.

In another incident, a thief — who allegedly struck at New Alipore and stole ornaments worth over Rs 3 lakh after being tipped by a domestic help — has been arrested.

Ajanta Sarkar, a resident of Subarna Dham CHSL, New Town, lodged a complaint against Rinku Samanta, who was hired through Sri Krishna Ayah Centre located at West Rajapur. According to the complaint, on Sep 3, Samanta, who had joined work on Sep 1, went missing from the premises, allegedly after stealing multiple mobile phones and cash amounting to Rs 24,000.

The stolen phones included two costly Android phones. The New Town police station registered a case, and an investigation was underway.

The victim urged the authorities to interrogate bothSamanta and the ayah centre's operator, Krishnapada Mondal.

On Aug 30, a gold necklace with valuable stones, a pair of gold ear-tops, a gold finger ring with a diamond, several silver rings, and a silver memento, collectively worth Rs 3 lakh, were stolen from a residence in New Alipore.

The police believe that the thief was tipped off by a domestic help, a search for whom is on.

Acting on information, a team from New Alipore PS conducted a raid and arrested Uttam Das, also known as Gangu Das, aged 45, from Chetla Lock Gate Road. Following his statement, the entire stolen items were recovered.

Police have repeatedly urged residents to exercise caution and conduct thorough background checks before hiring domestic workers. The police are also intensifying efforts to crack down on such crimes and ensure the safety and security of residents.

The police recently issued an advisory saying one is vulnerable to thefts even when inside the house. A senior Lalbazar officer urged citizens to hire domestic workers from trusted agencies only.
