Central minister warns of tough laws against Oppositions’ stand on SIR

Union Cabinet minister Giriraj Singh on Friday lashed out at opposition parties for what he described as attempts to politicise the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
During the last day of his two-day visit to West Bengal, Singh warned that the Centre would not hesitate to introduce stringent laws to counter any move that undermines national security. Speaking to reporters late Friday after attending a programme at the Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres (CRIJAF) in Barrackpore, Singh accused opposition leaders of misleading the public on the SIR issue. “The opposition parties are trying to extract political mileage by misrepresenting facts on internal security,” he said.
Singh named several opposition leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav, Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK leader M K Stalin, Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. He accused them of challenging the federal structure under the pretext of opposing SIR. “Those who defy the federal structure will face legal consequences,” Singh said. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policy on internal security is one of zero tolerance.” The minister alleged that the Opposition had unitedly insulted the people of Bihar by using SIR as a tool for political gain. He also claimed that Stalin had gone to the extent of “abusing Hindus directly.”
Singh, who represents Begusarai Parliamentary constituency in Bihar, added that “each of these leaders will be answered politically and it is only a matter of time.” When asked about Mamata Banerjee’s remarks that SIR would not be allowed in West Bengal, Singh shot back: “India’s Constitution was framed by Babasaheb Ambedkar, not by Trinamul Congress or its supremo. The TMC tries every day to weaken the federal structure. The day it collapses, the Constitution and the law will act against them.”
