  • A jewellery artisan who had recently migrated from East Burdwan, along with his young daughter, died when a four-storey dilapidated residential building collapsed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, late last night.

Five individuals were rescued from beneath the debris by Civil Defence personnel and local police. Authorities attributed the collapse to persistent rainfall, which had severely weakened the limestone structure. The affected portion, located in the Subhash Chowk area, gave way and buried several residents under the rubble.

Prabhat Bagdi (33) and his daughter Piu (5) were killed in the incident. His wife Suparna and their sons Rishi (6) and Sonu (4) were among the survivors pulled out alive. The East Burdwan district administration was informed of the tragedy by officials in Rajasthan. The Bagdi family had relocated to Jaipur last year from Kashipur village, under Jhaudanga Panchayat in Purbasthali.

Tapan Chatterjee, MLA of Purbasthali, said today: “We are in touch with the Jaipur administration, and I have sent some youths to Jaipur to support the bereaved family.”

The collapse occurred in a locality behind Bal Bharati School at Subhash Chowk Circle. The building housed over 20 tenants, most of whom were jewellery artisans from Bengal.
