Krishnanagar: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Aug 26 murder of college student Ishita Mallick in Krishnanagar has arrested prime accused Deshraj Singh's father Raghavendra Pratap Singh — a BSF man for aiding his son's escape to UP.
Police picked him up on Saturday night from the BSF's 20th Battalion camp in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. "He is being brought to Krishnanagar on transit remand," a senior officer said.
According to police, Deshraj fled Bengal and checked into a hotel in Ayodhya, claiming his bag, Aadhaar card and other documents had been stolen. He called his father from the hotel manager's phone, requesting money and an ID photograph. Rs 22,000 was transferred to the manager's account and the room was booked in Raghavendra's name. Deshraj later bought a mobile phone. When the SIT reached UP's Deuri village, Raghavendra allegedly tried to obstruct the manhunt.
Police had earlier arrested Deshraj's uncle, Kuldeep Singh. Acting on his inputs, Deshraj was caught at the Nepal border.
