  • Kolkata: A young Ballygunge-based chemical engineer, who works with a US-based MNC and whose husband is a senior geologist, has alleged that she was being harassed, stalked, and threatened online by her former classmate.

The accused was earlier suspended from school for harassing and bullying her several years ago.

The accused is not only calling her and her husband at odd hours of the day from multiple numbers but also opening fake social media accounts and posting cropped and fake objectionable photographs and write-ups of her.

The couple has lodged an FIR with Ballygunge PS and also lodged a formal complaint with National Cyber Crime Portal.

The family has claimed that they were receiving persistent and unwanted phone calls, as well as threats of physical harm. The harassment began on July 27 when the complainant's husband received a call from a man claiming to be a school senior.

The caller, using two different phone numbers, initially contacted the family under the pretext of a school reunion. But the situation escalated as the caller began making multiple calls daily, including at odd hours, demanding his wife's contact.

Upon refusal, the caller allegedly verbally abused the husband and issued life threats.

The complainant has expressed concerns over the caller's knowledge of their personal details, including their residential address, workplace, and their child's school. The family has also reported that the caller has been posting cryptic and derogatory messages on social media, using a Facebook profile under the name "Kalpana Roy (Sujata)".

These posts include morphed photos of the family, including her child, and threatening messages.

The complainant has highlighted that the individual in question has a history of inappropriate behaviour dating back to their school days, where he allegedly harassed her with unwanted advances. Despite being temporarily rusticated, the accused appears to have decided to trouble her.

"We have incorporated the case using BNS sections along with sections of the IT Act," said a senior officer.

Lalbazar has decided to focus on cyberstalking and cyberbullying in equal measure after a sharp rise in such complaints.
