  • Jalpaiguri: An Indian national, abducted by Bangladeshi miscreants on Monday morning after he went to his farmland on the other side of the fencing on the India-Bangladesh border, was freed after a flag meeting between BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Krishna Kanta Barman, a resident of Cooch Behar's Sitalkuchi, was handed over to Sitalkuchi police late on Monday evening, an officer confirmed. Police said Barman would be escorted back home once the legal formalities are done.

Locals said Barman crossed over the fencing at Mira Para to visit his farmland when a goat strayed into his land and damaged the paddy field. As he caught the animal to stop it from marauding his crops, its owner came and a heated altercation started.

As the argument escalated, the Bangladeshi man called a few of his fellow nationals and abducted Barman into the Bangladesh mainland, in Genduguri village of Lalmonirhat.

Sources said Barman was confined at the house of a local neta, and every effort by villagers to bring him back failed till evening. Sitalkuchi police reported the matter to BSF's local commanders, who, in turn, engaged with BGB and ensured Barman's release.

In a similar incident, Bangladeshi miscreants abducted one Ukil Barman this April to avenge the death of a Bangladeshi smuggler. That, too, was in Sitalkuchi. Ukil was abducted when he crossed the fencing to plough his land. After 29 days of relentless efforts, Indian authorities were able to bring Ukil back.
