Restriction on vehicular movement over old Benaras ROB

In a bid to complete the approach roads on both ends and construction of an abutment at the Kona end of the Benaras road over bridge, the Eastern Railway has decided to take a complete traffic block of about four months on the old bridge.
According to the ER, the existing Benaras ROB, owing to its age, has become structurally weak. The steel girders supporting the deck slab are severely corroded and perforated, leading to a substantial reduction in its load-bearing capacity. The continued movement of heavy vehicles poses a potential risk to public safety. To address this, a new road over bridge has already been constructed alongside the existing one. However, its commissioning requires the completion of approach roads on both ends and construction of an abutment at the Kona end requiring a complete traffic block of four months.
Given the block, a decision has been taken to restrict movement of all four-wheeler vehicles on the old Benaras ROB. Only two-wheelers and totos will be permitted to ply on this bridge until further notice. The authorities have been requested to divert all four-wheeler traffic through alternative routes until the new ROB is fully commissioned.
Notably, the construction of the new Benaras road over bridge (ROB) is a major infrastructure project that promises significant benefits to both road users and the railway network. By replacing the aging semi-through girder, the project will enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve traffic flow in the area.
