Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to say a strict no to the installation of Ferris wheels at the city's parks during Durga Puja.
An accident at Ramlila Maidan in Entally in July 2022 prompted the civic decision, said an official.
A 26-year-old woman, Priyanka Shaw, was hospitalised after she fell off a Ferris wheel on July 4 at Ramlila ground.
Three persons, including the Ferris wheel operator, were arrested in this connection.
The KMC first decided to put a ban on the installation of Ferris wheels in 2009 following an accident at Deshapriya Park in 2008, pointed out a civic official. However, later KMC granted permission to the puja organisers subject to the submission of an expert's inspection report on the safety of the giant wheel.
"This year we have clearly informed the organisers who hold their pujas at parks that no permission will be granted for the installation of the Ferris wheel. If we find any such wheels in violation of our order, we will lodge an FIR against the organisers. Flouters will not be spared," said a KMC official.
