  • Kolkata: Congress general secretary K C Venugopal will meet Bengal netas on Thursday during his two-day tour to prepare a blueprint for the forthcoming assembly polls in Bengal. The party will start organising ‘Voter Adhikar Sammelan' across districts from this month.

While Venugopal will meet top state functionaries to set the tone for the poll campaign, Karnataka neta Nasir Hussain and Youth Congress neta Kanhaiya Kumar will also visit the state. Several former Left Front functionaries, including former convener of CPM's research unit, Prasenjit Bose, are likely to join Congress in the presence of Kumar.

"After the political affairs committee meeting on Thursday, Congress will organise a district presidents' meet followed by an office-bearers' meet on Friday.

We will hold a rally at Thakurnagar on Sunday. Bengal Congress minder Ghulam Ahmed Mir will also be present at a meeting with the Matua community," said state Congress spokesperson Suman Roychoudhury.

"Bengal is a poll-bound state, and discussions over strategies are normal. Our priority is to strengthen the party in the state. Congress will continue to speak for the people in Bengal. But I will not be able to speak much about the meeting at this juncture," said Subhankar Sarkar, Congress state president.

Venugopal is likely to speak to all state functionaries, including Sarkar and seniors like Adhir Chowdhury, Deepa Dasmunsi and Pradip Bhattacharya.

"The first step is assessing the preparedness of the Congress workers in the districts where the party has a comparatively stronger presence. Whether Congress contests in all 294 assembly seats alone or in alliance is a decision to be taken much later," said a pradesh Congress neta.
