  • Durgapur: Over 300 NIT Durgapur students gathered at the institute's activity centre on Wednesday to listen to Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati's motivational speech that lasted 90 minutes, including a question-answer session.

The discussion ranged on a wide gamut of subjects, including the relative importance of science versus religion and abstract beliefs.

The Shankaracharya praised students for the depth of their questions and asked them to follow the golden principle: "Treat others the way you want to be treated."

NIT director Arvind Choubey introduced the Shankaracharya as a "master of Vedic mathematics". He said, "NEP 2020 has a section on Indian knowledge systems.

There was a time when foreigners flocked to India to learn about our knowledge. But now, students go to study abroad. The depth of these ancient knowledge systems needs to be understood."

The Shankaracharya will go on to lead a "darshan and deeksha" programme from Sept 12 to Sept 22 at a hotel in Asansol. Initially, the NIT's programme slide showed that the "darshan and deeksha" event would also be held at the institute's campus.
