• Five accidents across city claim five lives, teenager injured

  • Kolkata: Five persons were killed and one was injured in six accidents across Kolkata in the past two days.

    A 75-year-old woman, Sursathiya Debi, was crossing Darga Road near Don Bosco School around Wednesday noon when a govt bus on Route 524 hit her.

    The vehicle driver had slammed on the accelerator the moment the traffic light had turned green.

    The elderly woman was taken to CNMCH with multiple injuries and was declared ‘brought dead' there. Cops from the Beniapukur PS arrested the bus driver.

    The same day, a youth, Amit Mahapatra (25), who was riding a motorcycle, suddenly lost control of the bike, which skidded off Airport Road in Parnasree. Mahapatra was not wearing a helmet and suffered multiple wounds.

    He died of his injuries at SSKM Hospital.

    The earlier evening, around 7 pm on Tuesday, a truck collided with a motorcycle on Polerhat Road near Nayabad Ghosh Para. The rider, Mustakin Shah (24), who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to RG Kar with multiple injuries. He was declared dead at the hospital. The truck driver was arrested. Earlier that afternoon, around 1.10 pm, a senior citizen, Gandhari Sardar (65), was hit by an auto on Prince Golam Mohammad Shah Road under Golf Green police station.

    She was taken to M R Bangur Hospital, where she died around 2.30 pm. Golf Green Police Station detained the auto rickshaw driver.

    Not far away, on Prince Anwar Shah Road connector, another senior citizen Narendra Nath Maitra (66), was fatally hit by a truck. He, too, was declared dead at M R Bangur.

    A 14-year-old boy, Ravin Pandey, sustained injuries as he was hit by a motorcycle on DH Road. He is admitted to SSKM Hospital with multiple injuries.
