The Kolkata police Tuesday arrested a man who allegedly raped a 20-year-old woman after being invited to a birthday celebration last week. The other accused is absconding.
“The accused, Chandan Malik, was apprehended last night at Burdwan Station,” said a police officer.
According to the police, the woman was allegedly raped at around 10.45 pm on September 5.
The woman said she went with Malik, whom she had met a few months ago, to the house of another accused, identified as Debangsu Biswas, alias Deep.
She was told that there was a birthday party at the house. However, when she went to the house in Tollygunge, she found that only Biswas was there. She told the police that Malik and Biswas both allegedly raped her.
The woman managed to escape the following morning on September 6, and lodged a complaint with the police.
According to the police, the house owner told them Biswas was a government employee, and lived with his mother. The police said they are verifying the house owner’s claim.
A case was registered under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including kidnapping, rape, stalking, voluntarily causing hurt, causing grievous hurt, and wrongful confinement. The investigation is ongoing.
