  • Kolkata: Audio dramas have been part of cultural scenario for a long time but what makes Meghmuluk and Srinivas Music's joint production of Utpal Dutta's ‘Sanyasir Tarbari' unique was its innovative stage format, light, set, costume and sound effects and music.

The 105-minute play was staged on Aug 13 at Madhusudan Mancha in front of almost a full house.

The audio drama was directed by Sree Basu. Caesar Sen, who played the role of ‘Captain Clifton', said, "This is our second production. Sanyasir Tarbari is a famous political theatre by the legendary Utpal Dutta. It is based on the historic rebellion by sanyasis and fakirs in undivided North Bengal with Rangpur being the nucleus.

Generally audio plays do not have proper lights, sets or sound effects but we took care of them all.

The visuals, sound effects enhanced the dramatics of the audio play and left an impression on the minds of the spectators. Some moments in the audio play, like a fight sequence, captivated the audience because of sound effects, set and light."

The three protagonists were played by Sudip Mukherjee as Ramananda Giri, Sree Basu as Debi Choudhurani and Anirban Ghosh as Captain Rennel. Other members of the cast include Pradip Dasgupta (Kripananda), Souvik Sen (Shashanka Dutta), Souvik Guha Roy (Warren Hastings), Balaka Chandra (Mahakali), Santanu Paul (Bhabataron), Madhumita Dasgupta (Horomoni), Arpita Mondal ('English socialite lady), Somenath Bandopadhyay (Kishorilal), Shubhankar Bhattacharya as (Musha and Chirag), Sopaan Sen (Shibananda) and Debargha Paul (Gourdas).

The music was arranged by Alokesh Dey Sarkar.
