  • At a time when many dead persons are coming alive on the voters’ lists, a living voter in Kalna has been declared ‘dead’ and his name has been deleted from the electoral rolls, much to everyone’s surprise.

Seventy-year-old Khokon Das of Sardanga village in Kalekhantalla Panchayat, Purbasthali, was shocked when the updated voters’ list, published in January 2024, with his name deleted, was made public now, citing he had passed away in 2021.

A very much alive but dismayed Das said: “I have been a regular voter for the last 50 years, but the Election Commission has astonishingly declared me as dead and deleted my name.” His EPIC number (TFM 2554046), according to the Pradhan of Kalekhantalla Panchayat, Pankaj De, “was still valid and we extended benefits of government schemes based on that.” He, however, suspected a conspiracy behind this.

Das has lodged a complaint with the SDM, Kalna on the issue. The DM, East Burdwan, Ayesha Rani A told this correspondent, today: “We’ve registered the complaint. An inquiry into the problem has been initiated to ascertain the reasons behind this. Corrective measures should be carried out.”
