  • Amid the controversy around Bengali language, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has made it mandatory for shop owners and traders to equalise Bengali fonts with other languages on sign boards.

Earlier last week, the civic body had issued a notification instructing traders and shop owners to put up Bengali language on top of other languages in ‘prominent size’ on sign boards. The KMC had also given a deadline to complete the task by 30 September. The notification, however, did not mention further details of the font size.

The issue of size of Bengali fonts was raised at the monthly meeting at KMC House today. The opposition councillor, Sajal Ghosh demanded that the civic body must specify the exact size of the fonts as the one mentioned in the notification as ‘prominent size was creating confusion among the shop owners. The BJP councillor also proposed that the KMC House should issue a notification making it mandatory for the shop owners and traders to keep the font size in proportion to the size of the board.

Replying to the proposal, mayor Firhad Hakim said: “Every Indian language is given equal importance by the state government. As citizens of India, everyone has the liberty to speak their language. In Bengal, there is no differentiation on the basis of language. We therefore, have asked to put up sign boards having Bengali fonts equal in size with the other languages on sign boards.
