  • Rail journeys in eastern India will take on a new dimension when Aizawl in Mizoram will be connected with the rest of the country tomorrow. With the inauguration of the final 51.38-km Bairabi to Sairang stretch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, three long-distance trains will start operations, including one to Kolkata.

The 13125/13126 Kolkata- Aizawl Express, a tri-weekly service, will take 31.15 hours to complete a one way distance of 1,530 km. The route in Mizoram passes through the Lushai mountains, dense bamboo forests, valleys and hills. Passengers will pass through 45 tunnels and 55 main bridges, including the second-tallest pier bridge in India (114 metres high).

In what is being termed as a historic event, four state capitals in the north-east will now be connected by rail, Northeast Frontier Railway sources said. They are Guwahati, Itanagar, Agartala and now Aizawl. The Prime Minister is scheduled to flag off two other trains tomorrow, including the Aizawl Rajdhani Express.

Railway sources said train number 13126 will start at 10 a.m. to reach Kolkata at 5 p.m. the next day, while train number 13125 will leave Kolkata every Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 12.25 p.m. to arrive at Sairang at 7.45 p.m. the next day. The service will commence from 18 September. Badarpur Junction, Guwahati, Goalpara Town, Golakganj, New Jalpaiguri and Malda Town are some of the stations en route.
