What began as a clash between two groups of students snowballed into an alleged murder at the busy Dakshineswar Metro station this afternoon. Reports claim that one student fatally stabbed another with a sharp weapon inside the station, triggering panic among passengers.
The deceased, identified as 17-year-old Manojit Yadav of Alampur, was a Class XI student at Bagbazar High School. The exact circumstances that led to the murder are yet to be determined. The RPF and Baranagar police have launched an inquiry.
According to police sources, preliminary investigations suggest that a mere verbal exchange between the two groups escalated into violence. One member of the group allegedly pounced on Yadav during the quarrel and stabbed him repeatedly, leaving him bleeding profusely.
Other students, shocked by the sudden turn of events, rushed him to Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital in Kamarhati. Doctors there advised them to shift him to SSKM Hospital, but as his condition worsened they took him instead to Baranagar Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The gruesome incident, unfolding in full view of passengers waiting to board a Metro train, sparked wide-spread consternation, with many voicing concerns about security.
“It’s just shocking. Where is the security? Are we not safe even at a Metro station?” a passenger asked.
Reacting to the incident, the city Metro office issued a statement: “An unfortunate incident of alleged stabbing has taken place in the non-ticketing area of Dakshineswar Metro station. Metro authorities have immediately taken appropriate measures and the police are investigating the matter. There is no cause for worry about Metro travel.”
