• 5 buried alive at stone quarry in Birbhum, four injured

  • At least five people have been killed and few others are still trapped inside a stone quarry in Bahadurpur under Nalhati police station limits of Birbhum district today.

    Sources said that the accident occurred around afternoon today.

    The bodies of five labourers have been rescued and sent to a local hospital.

    Birbhum police said that so far five people have been killed and the bodies have been recovered and sent for post-mortem.

    Four more labourers have been admitted to Rampurhat Government Medical College Hospital in critical conditions. One of the labourers has been shifted to Burdwan Medical College Hospital after his health conditions further deteriorated. Nalhati police have rushed to the accident site.

    Eyewitnesses said that at that time about 10-12 people were working in the site when a portion subsided with a huge crackling sound.

    Immediately, the local started rescue operations and started recovering the trapped miners from the debris.

    Birbhum police are now trying to clear the debris to find out whether more people are trapped. So far nine miners have been recovered, both dead or alive.

    Sources said that SP of Birbhum, Amandeep and DM Bidhan Roy have rushed to the site after getting the news. The owner of the stone quarry will be questioned by the police, said sources.

    Ashish Banerjee, deputy speaker of state Assembly said that the accident is a huge loss for the victim’s families before the upcoming Durga Puja festival and said that the government will be beside these bereaved families.
