On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the legendary Bengali literary figure Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya organised a tree plantation event as part of an academic and social initiative. Bandopadhyay is revered for his profound contribution to Bengali literature, particularly for his acutely perceptive portrayal of rural life and his humane philosophical outlook. His magnum opus, Pather Panchali, remains a classic in Indian literature and cinema.
In commemoration of this eminent literary luminary, the college’s National Service Scheme (NSS) conducted the event under its ongoing project titled “Manishī Charcha” (contemplation on great minds). The project is dedicated to remembering eminent thinkers and cultural icons by planting trees on their birth or death anniversaries, thereby combining ecological consciousness with intellectual homage.
Subir Mukherjee, education officer, Hooghly Zilla Parishad, and Dr Pratap Banerjee, Principal of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya, graced the event as chief guests.
The programme commenced with a brief presentation highlighting Bandopadhyay’s life, literary contributions, and philosophical insights, with particular emphasis on his deep connection to nature and rural society.
“The tree plantation event on Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay’s birth anniversary represents a meaningful convergence of literature, ecology, and social awareness. Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya reaffirms its commitment to fostering a responsible and environmentally conscious academic community,” said Mr Chatterjee.
