Kolkata: At least four two-wheeler riders, along with a woman cop, had a lucky escape after an accident was reported around 8.45 am on Saturday on the Kolkata-bound flank (Dum Dum Park-Lake Town bound) of VIP Road, just metres away from the Kestopur crossing.
According to cops, a pick-up van collided with several bikes one after another when they were waiting for the signal to turn green. Five people, including a female traffic assistant sub-inspector, were injured. They were sent to the hospital, with one of them in a serious condition.
The incident initially caused panic in the area, with witnesses and cops suggesting that the van driver was either under the influence of alcohol or had dozed off. A traffic cop said a random alcohol test on the driver indicated that he was above the permitted level of alcohol.
