  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Police team probing the death of Jadavpur University third-year English Honours student Anamika Mondal is now focusing on the one-hour period between 9.08 pm and 10.15 pm on Thursday to check if there was any foul play or negligence.

A senior officer at Lalbazar, meanwhile, said that according to witnesses, she may have been intoxicated. "This will be confirmed once we get the viscera report," he added.

Mondal had last spoken to her mother at 9.08 pm and assured her she would leave for home around 9.30 pm. She was recovered in an unresponsive condition and rushed to hospital at 10.15 pm.

Police sources said a team went to the JU incident spot on Saturday and recorded statements from students, including those who were with her on Thursday night.

"We are scanning CCTV footage, videos and photographs to identify those who were present around her that night after 9.08 pm and asking them to join the probe," said an investigator.

"Anamika told me she would leave by 9.30 pm," said her mother. Her father said she had sent multiple photographs of the programme to her mother. "Even in the last call, she asked her mother if she would send more photos. My wife said she asked her to return quickly.

That was when she said she would leave around 9.30 pm," her father said.

The preliminary autopsy report has confirmed that Mondal died by drowning. There were no internal or external injuries. "There were scratch marks on her elbows that may have happened when she slipped and fell," said police.

Cops suspect she slipped and fell in the pond sometime between 10.10 pm and 10.15 pm while on her way back from toilet.

Mondal was declared dead at KPOC Hospital at 10.26 pm. Mondal was last seen around 10 pm heading to the women's washroom near the Arts faculty students' union room, around 100 m from the parking lot.
