  • Kolkata: A dispute between two groups of students over a suspected love interest is believed to have led to the murder of the class XI student, 18-year-old Manojit Yadav, at Dakshineswar Metro station on Friday afternoon, sparking outrage and questions over passenger safety in Kolkata Metro.

Another class XI student— 19-year-old Rana Singhof Baranagar—allegedly used the weapon to stab his classmate Yadav.

Police said Singh, a student of Bagbazar High School and resident of Baranagar's Alambazar, stabbed Yadav to death with the knife he was carrying in his school bag while travelling in a metro from Shyambazar to Dakshineswar. Both were students of Bagbazar School, with Yadav from the arts stream and Singh from commerce, and lived in the same neighbourhood.

Investigators revealed that the two had an old rivalry centring around a girl, reportedly the girlfriend of Singh's friend.

During interrogation, Singh confessed that Yadav would often disturb the girl and pass lewd remarks despite repeated warnings, which triggered frequent quarrels. The tension peaked on Friday afternoon after their school examination. Police said the duo argued inside the metro while travelling from Shyambazar but were separated by classmates.

However, when they alighted at Dakshineswar, the altercation turned violent. Singh allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Yadav twice in the chest, with one blow piercing his heart.

Eyewitnesses at Dakshineswar Metro described a scene of horror. Commuter Chaitali Mukherjee, a Belgharia resident, said, "As we were leaving the station, we suddenly heard loud screams. We saw a blood-soaked student crying in pain, being carried by two boys.

Shockingly, two RPF jawans stood nearby doing nothing, while the attacker escaped." Singh fled to his rented house in Alambazar, where he allegedly confessed to his parents.

The family allegedly tried to flee to Bihar's Begusarai but was intercepted at Howrah station on Friday evening. Police arrested Singh and detained his family members for questioning. On Saturday, he was produced before Barrackpore court and remanded in five days' police custody.

Anupam Singh, DCP (South Zone) Barrackpore Commissionerate, said, "Preliminary probe suggests the fight began over indecent comments made about a female friend. During the scuffle, Singh attacked Yadav with a knife, leading to his death. We are also questioning two other classmates."

Neighbours expressed shock at Singh's arrest. Commenting on the social implications, psychologist Samiran Khatun said, "Such violent tendencies among school students are alarming for society."
