  • Trinamul Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has set a target to win all nine Assembly seats in West Burdwan in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The announcement was made during a meeting with the district leadership held last evening. Rajya Sabha MP and senior TMC leader Subrata Bakshi was also present.

Two senior state ministers – law, judiciary and labour minister Moloy Ghatak and panchayat minister Pradip Majumdar – attended the meeting, along with Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) mayor and Barabani MLA Bidhan Upadhyay, Raniganj MLA Tapas Banerjee, Jamuria MLA Hareram Singh, Pandaveswar MLA and West Burdwan TMC district president Narendranath Chakraborty, AMC deputy mayor Abhijeet Ghatak and Durgapur Municipal Corporation chairperson Anindita Mukherjee.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Mr Chakraborty said the session with TMC’s national general secretary was “highly successful”. “Abhishek Banerjee has set a target to win all nine Assembly seats in next year’s polls and instructed us to begin campaigning and groundwork immediately,” he stated.

“We have already started groundwork in our district. Our leaders stay connected with the masses throughout the year and address their problems. Now we will intensify preparations to secure all nine seats,” he added.

Mr Banerjee has also directed the party to continue its movement over the implementation of the SIR by the Election Commission of India in West Bengal.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP won the Kulti, Asansol South and Durgapur West seats, while the TMC secured victories in Durgapur East, Pandaveswar, Jamuria, Raniganj, Barabani and Asansol North. Notably, the TMC captured the Jamuria seat for the first time in 2021.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP led in a majority of wards in Durgapur and Asansol municipal areas, despite the TMC winning both parliamentary constituencies.
