Suri: Police on Saturday arrested Bhulu Ghosh, the owner of the stone quarry whose collapse on Sept 12 led to the death of six workers.
Superintendent of police Amandeep said, "The mine was operating illegally.
The accident happened because there were no safety or security measures at the mine."
"We conducted raids in the area earlier to stop illegal stone mines in that area, but this mine was operating secretly. Sanjib, alias Bhulu Ghosh, was arrested on Saturday night from Nalhati and taken into custody. We will further interrogate to know who is behind operating the illegal stone mine," he added.
Acting on directives of National Green Tribunal, nearly 200 stone mining and crushing units were previously shut down for failing to adhere to safety and pollution control norms.
