  • Trinamul Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has said leaders above 40 years cannot head the youth wings anymore. However, those who reach 40 years will be absorbed in the main organisation. Also, the party is principally against the age-old practice of leaders holding two posts.

These points were made at a meeting with party leaders from Barasat recently. He is meeting leaders from the districts and giving them necessary instructions in view of the Assembly election scheduled next year. He has already held meetings with the leaders of Cooch Bihar, Malda, East Midnapore, Nadia, Hooghly, East Burdwan, among others. Mr Subrata Bakshi, state president of party, was also present at all the meetings. It was learnt that Mr Banerjee has instructed the leaders to bury the hatchet and work together to ensure victory of the candidates. He alleged that some workers were keeping contacts with BJP leaders. He said he had a list of such workers and action would be taken against them as and when necessary. He urged the leaders of Barasat district of the party to intensify their contacts.

The leaders should take part in the new Amader Para, Amader Samadhan scheme and build contacts with the local people. There is no place for complacency and everybody will have to work very hard to win the election. It was learnt that the national general secretary has expressed displeasure over the performance of the party in the Lok Sabha election. The party will launch programmes after Kali Puja. During Durga Puja, the leaders were asked to interact with the people in their respective constituencies.

“Residents should be made aware of various initiatives taken by the state government. We cannot afford to take the Assembly election lightly. Everybody should pull up their socks and work for the party.” It may be recalled that prior to the 2021 Assembly election, Mr Banerjee had toured the state extensively. Some leaders claim that he has the names of the leaders and workers up to the booth level on his finger tips. This will be an advantage during his visits to the districts.
