  • Murshidabad: Three children, two twin boys and their sister, died in a fire in Murshidabad's Bhanganpara early Sunday morning.

Police said a fire broke out at the house of one Swoyon Sheikh.

He was not at home, but his wife Sarjeena Bibi was sleeping with her twin sons Sahil Sheikh (9), Adil Sheikh (9) and daughter Sajida Khatun (6).

Around 1am, Sarjeena woke up to screams in the neighbourhood and found her house was filled with smoke. Flustered, she came out. Just as she stepped out, her house caught on fire. She couldn't go in to rescue her children.

When fire officials doused the flames, they brought the children out and took them to the Nashipur primary health centre.

The doctor declared all three children "brought dead".

"Initial investigation suggests that the fire was caused by a short circuit," a senior police officer said. The fire also spread to the homes of Swoyon Sheikh's two brothers Swopon and Noyon. Local MLA Reyat Hossain Sarkar said, "It is a very tragic incident. We are standing by the family and will try to help them in every way possible."
