A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 75-year-old father-in-law in a fit of rage following a heated argument at the victim’s Golf Green residence in Kolkata.
The arrested accused, identified as Sanjit Das, who married the victim’s daughter Soumashree just 21 days prior, was taken into custody after police launched an investigation.
According to police, an argument began between the victim, Samik Kishore Gupta, and his daughter on Thursday evening around 6:30 pm.
The situation escalated when Das allegedly pushed Gupta down the staircase, causing severe head injuries. The couple then reportedly fled the scene.
The couple then reportedly fled the scene, leaving the victim’s wife to find her husband’s body the next morning.
Gupta’s body was discovered on the staircase landing the next morning by a neighbour on Friday.
The victim’s son, Sujay Gupta, was also found unconscious under a cot in the house and was hospitalized.
A police investigation was launched immediately and Das was arrested, who reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
According to police reports, a heated argument erupted between the victim and his daughter on September 12 evening, around 6:30 pm, with Sanjit and Soumashree present. In a fit of rage, Das allegedly pulled the victim out of bed and pushed him down the stairs, causing severe head injuries. After the initial fall, Sanjit reportedly brought the victim back to his bed, only to lift him again and push him down the stairs towards the landing.
A murder case has been registered based on the statement of Gupta’s wife, Jayashree. While the motive behind the murder is still under investigation.
“The victim’s son, Sujay Gupta, was found unconscious under a cot in a first-floor room. He was admitted to MR Bangur Hospital for treatment. The reason behind his unconsciousness is also being probed. ,” the police said.
